Will there be an Universal Binary update? - For us on Intel Macs?

Recently stumbled upon an old copy of Myth from a friend. He then pointed me over to here. I was wondering is there an update for those of us on Intel Macs in development?

There might not have to be one, because from what i've heard (check the post on "Fate of Myth on Intel", I think it's called that) Myth 2 works fine under Rosetta. Also if you still want to play Myth TFL, you can download The Fallen Levels and TFL interface. Plus on Myth 1.5.1 there is vTFL.

Hey its me, the Guest above.

Anyways, yeah they run under Rosetta but it takes up huge amount of resources during gameplay. It simply gorges on 512MB of RAM and I've had frequent framedrop out.

I really hope that a Universal Binary does come out. Also are the tools going to be ported to UB as well?

What version of Myth are you trying to run under rosetta?

The newer versions of Myth II (1.4 and up) run under OS X natively. And from the test results I've heard, rosetta has no problem executing myth on an intel mac. Sure it may not be terribly efficient, but myth is an old game and doesn't exactly have big requirements, and the new intel macs are pretty beefy.

That said, if you really are experiencing problems using a new version of myth on an intel mac, and can't seem to remedy them by tweaking system/myth settings, then let us know, and I'm sure the dev team will look into porting myth yet again.

There isn't any plan to make a Universal Binary. Since the Intel iMacs ship with pretty hefty resources they seem to do fine in running Myth II & TFL. We have fooled around with making universal builds but the work to make a polished release seems to outweigh the benefit.

@ Doobie:

Myth II 1.5.1.

Yeah the new Macs are beefy but I still get hiccups in gameplay. Well I suppose you are right that the needs of a few shouldn't outweigh the work of many. Cheers anyways.

Try out the currrent build of 1.5.2 and report back how well it works. It is almost final at this point and is game play compat with 1.5.1. Check it out at http://myth.busybsoftware.com

Lurker, if we start getting reports of problems on intel macs that can't be resolved by tweaking settings, I'm pretty sure that the dev team will take a more serious look at making a native port.

Part of our mandate is to ensure that myth remains playable as hardware and operating systems change. Eventually, most mac players will be on intel macs, so that's not a segment we want to ignore.

I have an intel iMac also, but alas I don't get any time to play Myth these days. I've fired it up and verfied that it got playable framerates and sadly moved on. If life wasn't so busy ATM I'd spend some more time and mb even build up a Intel build and play with it.

so yea ive had a macbook pro 2GHz with 2GB of Ram for 2 weeks now and today i played some myth on it for the first time (shame on me, I know) anyway, while on the train on my way home I played some Jinn and some normal maps...(in build 274)

some findings:

the pregames (for solo maps) fade in and out really slow and laggy, also the actual pregame story text movement seems slow.

when starting a tcp/ip game and hitting the start button the screen goes black and then the multiplayer pregame pops back up for just 1 microsecond...(dont know if this is related to the intel macs or myth in general...)

framerate was between 20 and 30fps during battle

after about 15 secs of play the fans in the mbp get fired up and start making a lot of noise, dunno what thats all about. guess myth = hot...

...thats all for now

...Giz

I've got the same specs as Gizmo.
Tried under 1.5.1. and 1.5.2 build 272 and the input is ridiculously bad.
Literally, more often than not characters I type in the lobby never get accepted, even after multiple key press.

Turning off the "Reduce Processor Load" or renderer, i forget which helped, but only marginally.

My old TiBook G4 550 with 16 MB VRAM runs rings around this brand new 2 GHz Intel MacBoook Pro with 256 MB VRAM.

Something ain't right. :(

UPDATE: Just tried Build 274, it made zero difference :(

If you're having these problems Scratch, others are going to have them too. Emulation is often fickle.

Well, it definately IS NOT my MacBook Pro.
I fired up Myth 3 and maxed all options out on it, running at 1440 x 900.

Looks and runs perfect!
Smooth as glass!

Myth II performance = teh sUck!
I just want my Myth II experience to be smooth.

That's not a lot to ask, is it:rock:
