rolling boulder

Post by carlinho »

anybody knows how to make a projectile that resembles a rolling boulder?
I can make a boulder fly and when it lands it rolls if the terrain is steep, but how to make it without the need of a flight
as it would look weird somebody making a huge boulder fly when pushing the rock downhill
any ideas appreciated

thanks!

You can make rolling projectiles by giving them huge amounts of (negative) gravity in their object tag, you'll have to play with values to be sure though. I managed it in a plug-in I made that caused blood to flow downhill like it does in Myth 3.

Oh and make sure it isn't set to become dormant at rest, have it promote after a long time or something instead, as objects like this frequently will count as stopped before gravity gets them going again.

Good luck!

I have been thinking about this, to make a landslide. My idea was to create a few monsters that look like boulders, and have maybe a one type "walk" downhill, and another tossing debree down after them. Idk if it would work, im not very good with fear.

There is a landslide in bushido that is triggered by dwarves blowing the rocks, and another in The Scourge of Belial, where a monster is set to drop tons of rock on his death, which roll down and block a gate.

Just need some nudge to get them rolling, if their gravity is set high enough it probably wouldnt take a big push to where they actually fly, just a little tap.

thanks guys!
yeah fury, I was thinking originally of doing a unit with a continuous speed downhill, somehow the projectiles sound more real if they are boulders, but really difficult

Hara, I tried what you told me and it is incredible, the boulders go downhill really fast and inflict damage on any unit in the way without stopping until they reach a flat terrain
the thing is when a boulder touches another boulder they react like magnets of opposite polarity bouncing from each other and it looks really weird
should through a promotion I change it to a stiff boulder?
how would it promote then?
how to tell it to promote when still?

thanks a lot guys!!!!

EDIT: ok, so I found how they can avoid to react like magnets, the thing is the rock doesn't die when it stops, it is still active....
as to avoid it disappearing while rolling down I have to click -remains after detonation-
so the question is: how can I make it promote only when it comes after rolling down the hill completely still?

Maybe have the "At Rest" checked and let it detonate to a still rock when it stops.

I'd just give it a lifespan. If you know the boulders are usually going to stop within a minute, then set it to a minute and have it promote to still boulder at the end of its lifespan.
Depending on what type of rocks they are it might make sense in this case to have some visual difference between active rocks and inactive rocks, for example; active rocks could be red hot, while inactive ones are just plain 'cool' rocks. Since un-promoted rocks could still end up causing damage if you get too close to them.

mmm that could be just right, yeah the un-promoted rock just kept the "rolling" animation and kept doing harm...
I'll assign them a life span, I thought there would be a chance to promote on at rest, but somehow they come at rest when they first detonate uphill, and all the downhill movement is caused by the negative gravity and not the real movement of the stone...
anyways it's a pain in the arse to understand fear well, hahaha
thanks a lot for the help guys!!!!!!!!

thanks a lot guys!!!!
it worked Hara!!!!!
the rock rolls and kills any in the way and stops when the lifespan ends almost at same time it reaches the end of the hill

thanks!!!!!
