Running Amber with Sheepshaver

Post by gugusm »

OK, I managed to run Sheepshaver (using mac os 9.iso), but I don't know how to run Amber. Maybe that's a stupid question, but how do I do it? I've never worked with Mac before, so I'm a complete noob here

Once you are emulating Mac OS, open Amber. Then look at the top bar, you should be able to use the menu to open collections or make a new one. If you wish to edit collections, I suggest placing them in a SIT while on Windows. Then drag that SIT into your mac os hard drive. Expand it by double clicking. Now you can use Amber to open it or even drag a collection onto Amber to make it open it.

The reason Pyro suggests taking your tags you wish to work with and 'stuffing' into a .sit file, is that occasionally when transfering files from your native OS to the Sheepshaver OS, those files can corrupt themselves. If the file is compressed in .sit, it can be opened by default on MacOS9, and wont be corrupted as it's protected in a compressed shell if you will.

Yes, when I wouldn't SIT the collections, the Mac OS was trying to treat them as text files.

Heh, yeah, thanks for advices guys, but the problem is, that I can't actually open Amber. When I try to open it, it says "There is not enough memory to open "Amber 2.0b6" (zero K needed, 1,008,676 K available). Closing windows or quitting desk accessories can make more memory available."

What should I do?

BTW, normally I'm on Win XP, if it matters.

Hmmm I think there is a way to deal with this. Alt-I on Amber maybe? Or was it Windows-I? Something to do with how much memory the Mac OS is allowing Amber to use I think.

If you're interested in beta testing Oak (a replacement for Amber, among other things), send me a message requesting to become a private tester.

Good idea myrd, anyone serious about using amber should be made automatically an oak tester :)

To fix the memory problem you just have to Get Info on the Amber application (Command-I on Mac, not sure how the Windows keyboard does it). In that window there's a drop-down menu with General, Sharing, and Memory in it. In the Memory section, you can increase the amount of memory Amber uses.
The cake is a lie.

Thx Myrd :) , but still:

I've done what you said and it still doesn't work :(

Maybe I should set used memory in SheepShaver options to something lower? It's 1024 now I think. I don't know what to do... also, notice the text which I posted, it says: "zero K needed, 1,008,676 K available". WTF, no memory needed? :P I don't know what to do anymore :?

i use amber with sheepshaver on mac ... get info memory and have mine set to 400meg says suggested 13596 k

seems to work with no hassles via sheepshaver... as for oak its getting close to replacing amber.... :)
if one does not learn from the failings of the past they are likely to suffer its return.
