for free - all my map files!

Post by deadman »

Hey guys- long time no see!

I'm giving away the imac here pretty soon to get rid of clutter in the house (haven't used it in years). it still runs and has tons of mapmaking files on it from myth TFL and myth 2. Before I wipe the thing I wanted to offload all my old myth stuff (shame to delete it).

It's running OS9 and I dont have an FTP app on there, but as soon as I figure out how to get the files onto my server, I wanted to give em back to the community. Not sure if they are needed or wanted, but I figure if there's someone here who would want em, you got em.

if there's any interest, let me know.

What kind of files are we talking about here? You already know I want any Ghol Rugby files you might have that could help make its port go quicker.

If you get a chance to upload things that would be great, I am interested in anything you have. (I save stuff for posterity)

If you get to the point where your desire to catalog things is preventing you from uploading, please choose uploading disorganized over not uploading.

If you need a place to upload things to, let me know.

Also, if you are releasing these to the wilds for public use, a one or two line readme containing any restrictions/credits you would like attached to your files would be useful. (ex. "These mapmaking resources may be used freely for any non-profit purpose. Please credit me if you create anything that uses any of these resources")

Hey Deadman, a few options:

FTP: Try an older version of Transmit: http://panic.com/museum/transmit/
Hotline: Frogblast is PPC and still one of the top 3 Hotline Clients: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6669/frogblast

Come on uDogs Hotline (hl.udogs.net) and we can help you more.

Frogblast won't work on Mac OS 9. You need the original Hotline client.

a couple of OS9 ftp clients I remember using that still look to be available:

the appropriately myth named "fetch"
http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/download/ they have a version compatible with OS 9. 15 day free trial.

or Monica is a batch ftp client that's shareware for $20

burn a dvd and send to someone...

in fact anyone who has made myth stuff should put on to a back up dvd or cd or disket or usb key drive and email to who ever is the keeper of the magma...

let it flow... and dont loose stuff when a hard drive goes bad...

well here's the problem - it's an old mac. i connected my external drive to the thing but it wants to format it (its NTFS). Question for those who still use OS9- if you format something in OS9 can the PC read it?

I have a pretty solid LAN so it would be easiest if I could just FTP the things to my server... I'll try that route tonight.

By default, Windows can't read Mac (HFS+) volumes, but I hear you may be able to install something that may let you do that.

If you don't want to lose resource forks and such of some Mac files, you'd better pack them first, for example with StuffIt. In that case, you can possible just format your drive as FAT32 in Windows and I think Mac OS should be able to use it (though can't confirm this for sure). If so, you can transfer the files that way.

But maybe you're better off just uploading the files to Hotline?

Mac drive is a program for pc that will let you read the mac volume.... I used it when i took an old hard drive out and put it in an enclosure...

also, i vaguely recall OS 9 giving you the option of formatting a HD in FAT32 format? FAT32 is format older versions of Windows (Windows95?) used to use.
