saving maps for importing into loathing

Post by vinylrake »

hey stupid question. anyone know of a non-photoshop mac OS X app (preferably free) that can save an image as an 8-bit pict image?

i am trying to edit a color map, and need to import it into loathing. i used to do my color mapping in PS on a non-intel OS X mac, but this intel mac i have now doesn't support classic apps. i've tried saving as an indexed bmp in gimp after indexing to 240 and tried save-as in a number of other apps but none of the apps appear to support saving as pict so the resulting image files aren't recognized by loathing.

help?

Have you tried opening the indexed bmp and re-saving it with Preview as a PICT? Not sure if it will save it indexed, though. (Also likely won't work on 10.6.x, since they removed PICT support from Preview.)

that's my problem - i am on 10.6.3 and i can't find anything with PICT.

thought your tip about 10.6 might have been the key - did some searching and found you CAN still save files as PICTs (find Preview app, right click - get info, turn on the 'run in 32 bit mode' switch and start up preview - it adds 'pict' to the save-as dialog). but unfortunately even after indexing a map to 240 colors, saving as a bmp then opening in preview and saving as pict it still doesn't load in Loathing. Loathing (1.7.2) crashes when it tries to load the colormap. Nothing in the myth log but the usual.

oddly(?) the name of the loathing app is 'Loathing 1.7.2 Build 361' but the log identifies it as 1.5.2

2010-07-24 07:12:21 Loathing 1.5.2 running under MacOS 1063 ------------------------------------------------------------

update: GraphicConverter will save in the 8 bit PICT format that Loathing recognizes.

Yes, that's the one. I have an ancient version that predates OSX that runs on my OS 9/X dual boot mac.
