myth 3 and admiration for magma

Post by modivarch »

So a few days ago I pulled out my old copies of Myth having decided I wanted to replay one of my favorite games of all time. (No joke, I will ALWAYS mention Myth when discussing the best games I've ever played.) Anyway, I have vista and of course it didn't work, but then I came across this incredible site and I just want to say how impressed I am with all the work you people have done here. I immediately downloaded the M2 upgrade along with the TFL plugin for M2 and I've been having a blast these last few days. So for what it's worth I just want to say great job and I look forward to trying out some of the other plugins, etc.

As for Myth 3, I still can't get that to work on vista and I was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion.

Thanks all and again well done.

Try running myth 3 in compatibility modes.

Have you tried updating Myth 3 to 1.3.1? Myth3 still has its issues so I'm not sure how much useful updating will turn out for you.

Please stop posting this every time Vista is mentioned. It isn't helpful.

This is probably the best thing to try. As far as I know, 1.3.1 works for many people. It doesn't work for all though (doesn't work for me on XP for example). So you may be SOL since Myth 3 isn't being updated anymore.

Thanks for the responses. (Vista will be updated at some point, but I'm not buying a copy of windows 7 when I'm sure I'll be updating my computer at some point and getting a free copy.)

The compatibility mode worked (with 1.3.1) first try, so thanks for the tip!

Curious, how complex/difficult is Myth III to code, and where does Magma stand in terms of being "allowed" to update it (i.e. has Magma got permission to update the entire Myth franchise, and just chooses not to, or what)?

I only ask because if there were a time when future systems made Myth III thoroughly incompatible, I'm curious as to how difficult modifying it to run natively and if Magma would have the option of involvement. Also, didn't I hear something about how the 1.3.x series incorporated something from the previous Myth games? I don't know if it was the use of a similar tag system or what, but I'm sure I remember hearing some background element like that being changed.

I can't imagine Magma being terribly interested in that really, I was wondering how possible the option would be for the Magma team if the event arose. It'd be a shame if there came a time when modern computers just couldn't run it at all.

Myth III is, code-wise, 90% the same as Myth 2. At one point in time, after mythdev/flyingflip closed, we started to work on an update for myth 3, only to have flyingflip reappear with 1.3.1 (which we don't have the sourcecode for).

At that point we decided to leave Myth 3 alone, firstly because we weren't really that interested in it, secondly because next to no-one seemed to be playing it, and thirdly as we didn't want to make a conflicting version to flyingflip's.

That's all pretty much what I thought, but it answers my question - if Magma were ever to decide to update Myth III, the option would be there and it wouldn't be like learning an entire new game all over again or anything nearly as complicated.

It was more your options I was curious about, what you're doing now is sorta self-explanatory. I like options.

No, but it would probably be a large amount of work to even get it back to 1.3.1 quality. That plus making it compatible with 1.3.1? Difficult.

Why would it need to be compatible with 1.3.1? :P Only Myth2 v1.5.1 to 1.7.2 have a compatibility mode.
