Random 1.5 Crash Fix
---------------------

Turn off 3D Sound.

Best thing is, no matter which system it crashes on, you don't need to delete the 'preferences' folder.
Just have the crashed system(s) go back to the 'Preferences' option and turn off 3D Sounds.

First, I want to say, Myrd, you were right. The cutscene error messages had nothing to do with it. Sorry. We newbies tend to be

spastic when troubleshooting.

The problem is selecting 3D Sound with a SB Live sound card. Not every SB Live sound card has this problem, but some.

We ran MANY, MANY games with our three side-by-side systems and the problem replicated consistently.

The three systems are identical:
Dell 2.4
512 RAM
ATI 9800 Pro

EXCEPT the sound card in 1 is an Audigy 2 and in the other 2 is a SB Live (OEM).

No matter client or server, or any other setting, if PC 2(SB Live) turned on 3D Sound, that system would be kicked to desktop. PC 1

(Audigy) never had a problem and PC 3(SB Live) never had a problem.

The drivers listed for the 2 SB Live cards were different by date and final 4 digits. If I could download and get a new set of

drivers to take to any one of my SB Live OEM cards I would but any time I try and run the downloaded drivers I get the 'Creative

Product Not Found' message or something like it.

Simple answer, turn off "3D Sound".

Trust me. We could barely play a game coop together until we figured out that it was the '3D Sound' setting on one system.

Love,

Jim

The issue you're describing sounds similar to one I've been experiencing running Myth II 1.5.0 and also 1.5.1. The trouble is -- on the mac no option exists for toggling 3D sound, that I'm aware of... certainly not in preferences.

My system is
Mac Powerbook G4 1GHz
1024 RAM
ATI radeon 9000 card
OS 10.3

The symptom is a random crash on startup in single, multi or viewing films. Typical myth_log.txt output when this happens reads like:

2005-02-21 14: 04: 29
Myth II Public Beta running under MacOS 1030 ----------------------------------------------

Warning: Unable to find cutscene 'prologue.smk'.
Closing Myth.

The "couldn't delete :preferences:progress file" error corresponds to a crash.

The problem is not fixed by deleting the preferences directory, nor by re-installing myth.

This problem was occuring under OS 10.2.8 as well. When I upgraded to 10.3 the issue briefly resolved, but has now returned without further system upgrades.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated, as it renders online play virtually impossible.

Firstly, look at the permissions on preferences/progress. Make sure that its writable by your user account.

Other than that, could you mb post the relevant part (usually Thread #0) from the crash log?

Thanks for your quick reply!

Looking at the permissions, I have read&write but not execute for everything in :Myth II Æ’:preferences.

Regarding the second issue, I'll have to clarify. Sorry for the confusion; I had leapt to a conclusion on reading the initial post in this thread and used "crash" loosely. The Myth II app is never actually crashing, it just randomly refuses to begin a game.

When the problem occurs, instead of starting to render the game after loading the map, the app directly brings up the "you have quit from the game" post game screen (if a game) or the film-viewing control panel (if a film). The app appears stable and will subsequently run games / films (even the same film if it is selected again) normally... though often it will fail to run a game/film multiple times in a row.

In multi, the problem also does not cause disconnection from the metaserver; I can exit from the "you have quit the game" screen and rejoin lobby chat normally.

No crash.log is generated as far as I can tell (at least, searching for one, I was unable to find one for Myth with modification date that corresponded with known dates of problems.) I *do* have old crash logs for myth 1.5 that may be unrelated to the issue, but for what it's worth:

The log seems to indicate you are running 10.3.0 (no updates on base Panther). I suggest you update to the latest version (10.3.8), and see if the problem keeps occuring. I know 10.3.0 had numerous bugs which were fixed by subsequent updates.

That's correct. I'll see if that works.

The problem persists on 10.3.8. :(

New related symptom to report: I never host multiplayer games, due to firewall issues, but recently I tried to start single player games over pm.net as a test. Sometimes this issue described above occurs (game fails to load on start). After this happens, subesquent attempts to create a new game always fail, producing this error:

Create game failed: Unable to open listening socket. Err: -4994

Restarting myth resolves this, until the random lack-of-load occurs again.
