I am asking because I can't connect to Playmyth or mariusnet from my school. I can however play lan games accross the student network (not really a surprise). I pretty sure it uses TCP, does it also use UDP? I'm not trying to host here, just connect to the servers and play games.

I'm pretty sure most computer games use UDP. What usually happens in school/university networks is that internal security and firewalling doesn't exist (from school computer to school computer or from school port to school port). However when it involves connecting to anything outside the school either their proxy or firewall prevents most if now all UDP ports and allows only selective TCP ports of 18,19,20,21,22 and 80 most of the time.
