A friend of mine who I recently introduced to the wonderful world of Myth has been having trouble getting it to run.

The problem appears to lie with OpenGL support on Windows, which was selected by default after updating, she is currently running Software Mode with no bother at all.

He system is a run-of-the-mill, older Windows 98 machine, but with a NVidia GeForce FX 5500 installed to replace a burnt out card.

On OpenGL her computer loads up Myth fine, but when trying to start a level (immediately after the pregame screen), Myth crashes with an error message, but the error message disappears immediately, no information is put into myth_log.txt.

I'm going to suggest she update to the drivers here, but I was kinda hoping to see if anyone else had a similar problem to this, and if the drivers did in fact remedy it. My own personal experience with Windows 98 drivers has been horrible at best, and my friend's machine is a bastard so I wouldn't want to cause a ton of trouble if it isn't going to help.

Has she tried using Direct3d? D3D is more likely to work on strange windows boxes then OGL. I guess we should probably have it default to D3D, but being Mac guys we keep thinking OGL is the standard. Also the reason it crashes when the game starts up is because until a game actually start to load you are always using the software renderer(At least in Myth II).

Actually, I made it specifically select OpenGL for Geforce4 and Geforce FX 5xxx cards because as far as the feedback went from what we received, those cards ran Myth's OpenGL very well with no problems, and at the same time suffered from horrible water lag in Direct3D.

I am not sure what the problem is with her setup, but our OpenGL implementation is not the most compatible in the world (I know it borks on my radeon 9200), though besides this report, all other Geforce4 and Geforce FX 5xxx feedback has been positive. Perhaps it is a combination of using it on Windows 98 that is causing the problem.

I'll see what more information I can get, one point though is that her Myth log reported her card as not appearing to support Direct 3d at all:

Trying a resolution of 1024 x 768 does not work, and Direct 3d doesn't appear as an option.

Sounds like it's time to install some video card and DirectX updates. Because surely that card supports Direct3D(not saying Myth will work well with in it) and based on people's feedback OGL should work also for that card. Might also want to check if any software from the original video card can be removed.

Final suggestion: Install the lastest test build(which I should have out by the weekend with some luck). A ton of stuff windows wise has changed in it.
