I just got a bunch of 233MHz G3 Beige without any hard drives. Anyone know if Apple has anything OS9 or older available on their website? If not do they even sell it anymore? After searching all I could find was 10.4, and from reading Wallet's rant about how Tiger hosed Cid's Imac I'm not sure I want to spend $200 on software that'll cripple the machine.

Beige G3's won't run 10.3 or 10.4 unless you use XPostFacto. 10.4 is a fine update for the most part, any OS update has the ability to wreak havock on a machine. As for the best OS for a Beige G3, I'd probably go with OS 9. You will need to go to ebay to buy a copy of it since Apple hasn't sold it for some time now.

PS: Any builds beyond 1.5.2 will not support OS 9

"any builds beyond 1.52 will not support os 9" wth.... main reason myth is still around is cuz people have older computers that cant run many of the new games.... os 9 i still like better than osx though i admit i have a grudge since i switched to pc from mac because of the first release of osx ...
I have os8 and os9 install cd's to get back on the subject..

The only way to maintain OS 9 compatability is to treat it has a seperate OS port. Because going forward we will be using OS X only tools so we can take advantage of the OS X API. Not to mention we may have to if we want to or not because 10.5 may not support some of the Carbon API calls we have been using.
Bigger problem is no one on the dev team even tests under OS 9 anymore or has any interest in building OS 9 apps. OS 9 has only continued to work because we didn't do anything to break it.
Finally the stuff beyond 1.5.2 will not change game play or will add features that would make sense on OS 9. Notice how little 1.5.2 has changed from 1.5.1.
What I'm saying is 1.5.2 will work for years to come on OS 9 and will be able to play with 1.6(or whatever we name the OS X Universal build).
heh the first few releases of OS X really sucked and so did Apple during that time frame. Has a result I converted my entire company to Window 10.2 was the first release that I could stand to use on a daily bases for programming work.

Well to the point, the beige G3 runs pretty well on 10.2. I have one going downstairs that I use for nothing...But used to use as my main computer.
As for 10.1...I never used it I resisted the shift until 10.2.

"Hosed" isn't really the correct term. It changed a lot of things (for the worse in some cases), but you get used to it quickly. I'm happy with it right now.
I think it fucked with my iTunes though. >_>

10.4 was like having a proctologist stick a finger in my arse. It had to be done, but it was really uncomfortable.
And - unfortunately, I can no longer use F13 to take screenshots with Snapz. WHAT THE HELL??

What? Go into Snapz prefs and change the hotkey to something that does work mb? Or change F13 from your expose hotkey if you have it set to that... it might be fucking with you. That's the ONE thing i dont like... i've got my hotkeys as F2--->F4, and when I try to change volume _down_ (F3) in game my expose goes to the desktop mode and removes myth from my screen. No biggy, mb I should change my hotkeys myself...

Yah but no hotkey that I choose works at all. Not since I threw 10.4 at Cid's computer! Hey I'll give it another shot because this is mega inconvenient.
