Porting Myth to iPhone/iPod Touch

Does Magma have permission to port Myth? I'm thinking:

Port Myth to the iPhone/iPod touch OS!

Dangit, I'm serious. If you or someone you know has an iPod Touch or iPhone, you know it would be an absolute smash hit at the App Store. My son is currently loving a game called Warfare, Inc. for his Touch. It's an RTS like Warcraft/Command&Concquer/Myth, with differences from Myth, of course -- resource-building and such. But I'm talking port Myth as it is, not making it like those; they're just examples of a broader similarity.

Similarities are:

You view your units from above.
You can band-select groups of units.
Double-tapping grabs nearby like units.
Target enemies with selected units.
It has a mini map (OH) in the corner!
I haven't actually sat down much with it yet, so those are first-impression similarities.

Watching Duffiek play it, and trying it out myself, I could not stop grinning at the thought of having real Myth 2 on that iPod. It could be done. It would be friggin' revolutionary.

You can see a video of the gameplay of Warfare, Inc. at TouchArcade. It's a review, and it'll give you a good idea of its Myth-like gameplay:

My first thought, and I keep coming back to it, is: Myth would be soooo awesome on the platform. It's a powerful device, absolutely amazing. It handles 3d games really well: we have several racing games, a couple first-person shooters, a flight sim, other 3d stuff.

It - can - be - done . Of course, legally it prolly can't and my dream will be only a dream.

Yeah, we'd need permission from Take2 and probably some kind of profit sharing agreement to do this.

Plus, it would probably need to be re-designed in terms of UI.

If I recall roms for video games ported from consoles to PCs are legal to play for 24 hours, and after that only legal if you own the original game. That's what I heard YEARS ago when I actually tried some roms. Not sure if that's true, or how much that would apply here.

The iPhone would definitely be easier, since it runs Mac OS X and has good hardware specs. The DS has terrible hardware specs and runs a completely different OS and architecture.

I think about this just about every time I use my iPod touch. There are technical hurdle's as Myrd said. The whole UI would have to be rewritten. Every collection would have to be shrunk i think. The game right now with no plugins is around 500 meg. That's pretty big for a 8 gig device that also holds all your movies and videos. You might have to remove all the multi player maps as well. Or even sell a single player and multi player version.

Set aside all the technical hurdles though. The real problem is Take 2. Nobody has any contacts at Take 2. We'd need permission/contracts to get this thing going. Until that happens, it's dead in the water.

So lets all apply for jobs at Take2! I don't care if it's as programmers or receptionists or making the tea, if we ALL do that someone's gotta get a job :\

Just do it anyway. Take2 doesn't even know it's own ass from it's head, and doesn't know it owns Myth.

I'm pretty sure when myth became the top seller on the app store take 2 would notice.

I like my house and would rather not have it sued away from me.

Everyone needs to join my new group I am creating to develop Myth for the iPhone.

We'll call ourselves the "Homeless UNderground Gypsy codeRiters? Yes!" " collective. Or just 'hungry' for short.

we can always make a myth-clone! I think it would be the first myth clone anyways

any medieval strategy game has swordsmen, archers and the likes. Dwarves could be called midgets instead and myrkridias could be werewolves

warrior - warrior
bowman - archer
dwarf - midgets
warlocks - mage
journeyman - shaman
heronguard - knight
berserk - scotsman

etc
:)
