Poll: Myth II Update Choices Mandatory or Not?

Talk about anything here.

Should it be mandatory for all users in a *hosted* game to be on the same Myth version?

Poll: Myth II Update Choices Mandatory or Not?

Post by Isolder »

To be absolutely clear, this poll is not asking if all users should be on the same version to join Mariusnet. It is specifically regarding individual games hosted on Mariusnet, but not Mariusnet itself.

Right now when a person running an older version of Myth joins your game the gameplay is reverted to that version. So if you have nine 1.7.1 users and one 1.7.0 user, you'll be playing with 1.7.0 gameplay. All fixes and 1.7.1 specific enhancements will be unavailable.

If the poll wasn't clear, the question is if the host is running "1.7.1". Should all users be forced to upgrade to 1.7.1 if they want to play with him?

I voted 3, but I would like to add the option for map makers to click a box when making a plugin "Requires 1.X.X" And also blocks people from joining.

I voted 3, but only if people who can't join will get a message that they need to upgrade with a link to dl, or the standard Tain popup.

Voted 1, but would take 3 if implemented correctly.

I voted 'yes' under the condition that the people who don't update get a link to the update and that there will be updates for all operating systems, so we're not excluding people who cannot update, because that would be unfair.

Then you should have voted for the 3rd option which covers your concerns. Choosing "Yes" means completely forced with no exceptions.

i voted no and there is no logical conclusion to make myth version updates mandatory for the server... all the positive reasons for it are far out wayed by the downsides.

it is simply too limiting and will shrink the community even more... open up, get smart play smart and inspire others to play with you.

if you don't get that then well your simply not paying attention :)

i'm thinking about voting no because all of the new players / players looking for updates won't be able join the game to ask ppl where to find the update (or get badgered by ppl who are tired of seeing red text next to peaples names)

but this also makes me see clarity in option 3.
hey :D

They would still be able to connect to M.Net and talk in the lobbies, so that's really not a problem.

actually last i checked guests cant talk in lobby... only once they join the game. if anything make it a host option though even that is a bummer for the person cant join and have the host "inspire" them to go download the latest update. ... just say hey sorry we want to use 1.whatever game play so youll have to update to play .... das boot. and if they want to stop getting booted and play on that host they will go get the update.

too many reasons why mandatory updates are a bad idea....

Nope still mandatory. Positives far outweigh the negatives.

Is it possible to have a dialog box come up when you join a host running a newer version which says something along the lines of...

The host is running a newer version of Myth 2, update or join?

Essentially using the same idea as when you double click a red game and it gives/takes you to a download page.

There is something that could be done. Not quite a unique dialog, but it's doable.
