photoshop color 256 (Windows PC)??

Post by juliocpaes »

Hello all Mythers,

could anyone suggest me a good photoshop to create or edit a map for Myth 2??
I researched some online, including online photoshop, but accepts no 256 colors.
would also like to ask a question, why "Loathing" only works with 256 colors, it seems very poor, there is no way to make an improvement to accept more color?

photoshop does let you import and save images in 256 colors (you SHOULD save your maps at a color depth closer to 240 because Myth uses some of those extra 'color slots' for things like drawing blood on the map). if you are looking for a free/shareware application, GIMP is free and works on PCs or Macs or Linux.

The color limitations are mostly just because the game is old. When the game was created a lot of computers wouldn't have been able to handle all the unit sprites, models, scenery, blood and explosions AND a high-color map. I remember playing Myth TFL and the computer I had (a 2-3 year old computer) could just barely play TFL, when SB came out I could only play it in software mode. :(

MS Paint is NOT a good program to create maps with.

To make a good looking map you HAVE to use an application that allows layers - like GIMP(free) or PhotoShop($$$)

If you have never made a map before, the best way to learn the basics is to follow a colormap tutorial/guide like this one : http://mything.org/mythgraveyard/file/C ... lkthru.pdf

there are MANY other mapmaking and colormap specific articles and guides in the myth graveyard, but of all the colormapping guides I have seen, i believe this is the best and most comprehensive one. It walks you through ALL the steps to create a nice looking map, and explains a lot of the details and tricks ou need to do to make a GOOD quality colormap.

In my opinion, you HAVE to use some kind of walkthrough/guide the first time you make a map if you don't want to waste an incredible amount of time and effort.
