Was your computer or more precisely, your graphics card, overheating maybe?

i don't think so. but i neutral hosted one game this morning and then went to play on the next one and it did the same thing as in the images depicted. help, what can i do to fix?

i switched to software mode and it 'fixed' the problem but opengl looks much better, what can i DO?

Well that's because software just uses the computer's built in graphics abilities, while OpenGL uses the card, so that's why Software would work.

If that's the case, then it seems to support Pyro's theory.

Trippy screenshots though :-)

Try updating your graphics drivers?

Have you done something recently to your computer? Have you upgraded your graphics drivers recently? I still suspect something is starting to die in your graphics card. Not enough to stop it from working but enough to start heating it up and go crazy with its display. Touch the area near the card like where your monitor is hooked on and see if it feels warm or hot. If it is overheating it could be due to poor ventilation or too much dust in your comp, or the card itself is starting to breakdown.

Sometime last year I was having issues. Smelled burnt plastic at one point and shut down my computer to take a look inside. One of the wires for the power cable hooked to my grahpics card had melted and burnt. I could not even pull out that cable because of it. I noticed the fan on it was not spinning which I concluded must have been the reason for the overheating. I cleaned it up and made sure nothing was clogging it. Nothing else seemed wrong and I turned it on again. Everything worked and nothing went bad again.

Some months later I start having issues that only seem to show up when I loaded Myth (I wasn't playing other games at that time to test others). I could feel the card was getting really hot to the point I could not touch it for long. It eventually died and I noticed 3 little components were a bit warped and disconnected.

Wow that's a really old video card - Geforce 4 MXs were basically rebranded GF2's IIRC :) Have you tried any of the other renderers btw curiously (like Direct3D)? Is it just OpenGL that has this issue? As Myrd says, have you found the latest drivers?

Does it happen with previous versions such as 1.7.1 too?

i have the latest drivers for my card, also I DID NOT have vsync checked for open gl and before i've always had it on. this card is almost... 7 or 8 years old im thinking? i have not tried it on 1.7.1, but maybe ill attempt that right now. i have not cracked open the case to inspect the card yet but i'm thinking its has some kind of visible damage, i always used opengl and the card has definitely seen plenty of work. i think direct 3d looks like crap so i probably won't trouble shoot it. mb ill go about documenting it just for the sake of erm... this problem?

have any of you guys seen anything compared to what I was posting as screenshots before?
all the units are zoomed in on and upside down at all times, the water is also able to display itself.

not visually exactly the same but i saw a similar level of weirdness (white maps with random swatches of bright purple/yellow, invisible units or units popping partway through the mesh, etc) a few years back when i was trying to get a Radeon something or other working with my ancient Mac G3. pretty sure it was a driver issue even though i was using the driver that shipped with the card.

hmm so i switched to 1.7.1 and it doesn't happen, switched back to 1.7.2 and its not happening but ill use it a lil more and see whats going on.

yeah VR ive seen that before a lot more, never seen this until the past 2 days however

If it happens intermittently it sounds like your GPU is nearing the end of its life (surprised that it still works after this long!)... Heat issues or other errors can cause arbitrarily wacky things to happen like you're seeing. There's likely not much you can do about it in the long run other than to replace your GPU with a newer one.

heh im probably going to wipe this harddrive and install the 120 and 320 gig hd's i never put into the damn thing, but this dell is old... and it's a dell. i'm surprised it even works at all, but I'll keep the GPU in mind if I consider updating it.

Yeah fair enough. You probably can't even a get a GPU for a system that old anymore in any case.
