a long long time ago in a myth engine 256x256 was the largest texture size for models... 512x512 works now though is that because of 1.8 or just because video cards are better? would 512x512 model textures crash some computers? would 512x512 detail textures (oak) crash some computers?
(note for that building 256 work fine since one panel is 256 and the other is 512 and not much visual difference...
