Reviews of Myth 2 Medieval
by MAIK
I've only played a handful of solo levels (5-6) with this conversion so take that into account when reading this.
This is a very playable conversion, I played a handful in one sitting and came back a couple of hours later to try some other levels because I was curious how they would play with this conversion.
Unit-wise this is an interesting conversion. Familiar levels feel different with (almost) all different (non-bungie standard) units. All the 3rd patry units the author collected into this conversion look really good, and the author has collected some interesting units that aren't so different that they radically change the gameplay, but which are different enough to make familiar levels a little less familiar and make you rethink your strategy a bit.
Some of the enemy units look too much like player units to tell them apart on the early levels, but with the introduction of different units in later levels that is less of an issue.
At first I thought the Civil War type cannon was too much more powerful than the dwarf it replaces since it gives you a much longer-range artillery weapon, but after playing a few levels and seeing how hard it is to hit fast moving targets and how the cannon has a tendency to hit friendly units when it uses it's close-range buckshot attack (If you don't micromanage them in close quarters they can be as deadly to your units as a drunken TFL dorf with grease on his hands). In indoor maps of course there is no long-range attack so you are limited to the buckshot.
I noticed a small bug in Into the Breach - You can destroy the gate winch with the cannons which locks the game - it never pans to the invisible unit.
The author made the effort to add some nice touches like a new startup screen (though like most plugins it's not visible until you play a level so you see it on your way out of Myth) and new music for postgame screens adds a refreshing change from the music you've been hearing for 10+ years. (though the tracks with lyrics get old faster than instrumentals)
All in all I would say this conversion is definitely worth a try - it's a good solid conversion, featuring creative use of 3rd party units to create a pretty consistent (mostly) non-magical, non-fantasy "world". It's probably especially good for anyone who likes the bungie solo campaign but has played those levels to death.
I'd give it a 7 out of 10 if there were that many stars, but there are only 5 stars so I gave it a 3.
